01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the heart of Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district, Onofre offers an authentic slice of Spanish culinary charm, blending the cozy ambiance of a local tapas bar with the curated allure of a quality wine store. This intimate spot on Carrer de les Magdalenes is a hidden gem for those eager to savor traditional Spanish flavors alongside perfectly paired wines.

At Onofre, the focus is on classic Spanish tapas — the kind that beckon with vibrant aromas and rich, comforting textures. Diners often rave about their melt-in-your-mouth brandade, a creamy, subtly seasoned delight that lingers on the palate. The selection of wines is thoughtfully curated, featuring standout bottles like an inviting €28 pinot noir that complements the menu with elegance and balance. The tapas here are designed to be shared, creating a convivial and warm dining experience that encourages lingering conversations and new friendships.

The restaurant’s cozy and understated decor makes it feel like a well-kept secret, particularly for those eager to experience where locals truly dine away from tourist crowds. However, the intimate size also means it’s crucial to secure reservations — walk-ins might find themselves squeezed into one of the tiniest tables, nestled between walls but enveloped in a snug atmosphere that invites you to unwind and soak in the charm of Barcelona’s old town.

While several guests praise Onofre’s friendly and attentive staff who enrich the experience with genuine care, some have noted hiccups with service speed and order accuracy. For example, a table of three once waited unusually long for their tapas, even receiving a croquette that was still frozen inside. Such moments of imperfection contrast with other glowing reviews about the staff’s warmth and helpfulness, painting a picture of a place committed to passion but sometimes challenged by the bustling pace of the city.

What truly sets Onofre apart is the palpable local vibe—here you’ll overhear snippets of English from travelers and locals alike, sharing stories and laughter over plates of divine tapas and glasses of cava. The restaurant’s unpretentious charm combined with its dedication to quality food and wine creates an inviting experience that feels both genuine and rewarding.

If you’re looking to explore Barcelona’s culinary scene beyond the typical tourist path, Onofre is a compelling choice. It invites you to slow down, savor each bite, and revel in the simple pleasures of Spanish cuisine paired with excellent wines, all within an intimate, tucked-away setting that perfectly captures the spirit of the city.

Food is okay, but overpriced. Service was astronomically horrible. Table of three we ordered 3 tapas, cappuccino and cava. It took exceptionally long for the food to come out, and when we realized we were missing the croquette waiter forgot to write it down. Took another 20 minutes for that. Croquettes came and still frozen in the middle. We confronted the waiter and showed her they were still frozen and she got annoyed with us and started speaking Spanish in which she thought I didn’t know. So I mouthed the word b* to her, not out loud, and she acted like she was going to put her hands on me. My sister has it all on video where I’ll post it to my YouTube. It was really disappointing, I would highly suggest finding else where to eat this establishment is ghetto including the manager with the blonde hair.

Came across this spot on my last evening in Barcelona thanks to Google maps. This place is very tiny, and since we were a walk in the owner put us at the smallest table (literally had to move the table out in order to take a seat) squeezed in between 2 walls. Nonetheless, it was cozy and the atmosphere was nice, heard mostly American English there. The food that we ordered was good and came out pretty fast. My only negative comment was that I had to ask our server to change our plates before the main course, I guess it's not common in Spain to offer clean plates after having appetizers. Prices were reasonable and overall we enjoyed it at Onofre.

This is a small place hidden in the old town centre near the cathedral but not a tourist trap. It's only as wide as the door and not well advertised so you can easily miss it. It has a good selection of wines and the €28 bottle of pinot noir was really worth it. The waitress didn't understand English very well and twice brought us the wrong order but it was great tapas anyway. Recommended the fish carpaccio and the foie shavings.

We had a wonderful experience here! We ordered jamón ibérico, cheese, croquetas, tomatoes and alioli bread, shrimp, patatas bravas, sangría and some cava— everything was absolutely delicious with amazing flavors. The atmosphere was lively with great music, the prices were very reasonable, and the service was excellent. Definitely a spot I’d recommend if you’re in Barcelona!

Happened upon this tiny spot for lunch while having a wander and wasn't disappointed. Lovely selection of tapas and larger plates (the artichoke salad was delicious) and an extensive wine list. Service is friendly and efficient, whilst being relaxed. Good clean toilets too!
